Artist Statement

I really enjoy making art, especially paintings.  I believe that painting is the best way that I can truly express my imagination to the public.  I strive to have the viewer understand what my artwork is trying to say.  At this moment my paintings are focusing on narrative themes.  I prefer using images that can help explain the narrative for example the human form, mechanical objects, and nature.  The process starts by choosing an idea.  Then I start gathering images I find from Google Images or books/magazines.  When I have all my references I then decide how to place the images so the narrative is the prominent. From there I might use the color copy machine to manipulate the image by moving it around while being copied.   I always begin my painting process with a quick wash with burnt umber.  Then I use chalk to draw out the image over the burnt umber.

My biggest inspirations come from pop culture.  Jimi Hendrix has to be the biggest influence in my life.  Because his music opens up my mind to more creative ideas every time I listen to his songs.  Listening to his songs I gather ideas for paintings, mostly paintings about his songs and how I can twist it enough so it becomes an original of mine.  Tattoos are another influence because of the statement that they make to the public, and the beauty in them.  Tattoos say that this individual wants the world to see that they are not alike, that everyone is different; people who get tattooed just show it in a more broad form.  M.C. Escher and Salvador Dali are my two most influential artists because there artworks constantly make me curious as to how they came to that concept in their paintings and drawings.   They motivate me to make artwork that has the public asking the same questions.  My concept in my artwork is to have the viewer question my work by asking how he came to this idea, but, when the viewer really analyzes the artwork, it comes to them through the painting.  My goals and aspirations as an artist is to make art that tells stories from life, songs, and my imagination; and mostly to always have fun doing what I love.

Biography

Paul D Jimenez was born in Orange, CA and raised in Fullerton, CA.  He attended Fullerton College, CA and received his Associates Degree.  From there Paul transferred to San Francisco State University where he has received his Bachelors Degree in Fine Art.  His biggest influences are music, tattoos, and sports.  Music opens up his mind for more creative paintings, and by how the lyrics speak to him emotionally.  Tattoos influence him because the artwork is still taboo in society, and that each work is one of a kind; this is important to Paul because he strives to make his artwork one of a kind.    Sports show him how dedication to your practice can make him a better painter.  Paul has showed his artwork in four shows: San Francisco State Senior Show 2008 & 2007, San Francisco Ocean Film Festival in 2008, and Salon Des Refuses in 2007.
